The institution has been designated as an institution of excellence for the Yale School of Arts and Sciences in New Haven, Connecticut.
The new Britain was settled in 1687 and incorporated as a new parish, but the name was a transfer from Great Britain. Founded in 1850 as a township, it was separated from the nearby town of Farmington, Connecticut, in 1871.
